This $104 million, award winning redevelopment took place at the UNSW, Kensington Campus over approximately 5 years. The existing building was transformed from the inside, adding a new dimension to create a world-class research, teaching and learning facility.
Builder AW Edwards received the prestigious 2019 Master Builder Award for a Tertiary Building Project for their outstanding work on this complex project. Designed by Hassell architects, this extensive refurbishment of a 50-year-old engineering and telecommunications building was technically challenging due to its prominent location on the university campus.
The project’s 14,000m2 refurbishment area included 2 buildings – one 6 level (south block) and a 5 level (north block). The facility contains teaching laboratories, technician offices, workshops, computer rooms, lecture theatres, amenities and research laboratories. A new plant room, hot and chilled water plant and cooling towers, water storage and back-up generators were provided along with specialised equipment such as a fibre-optic draw tower, lasers and two anechoic chambers.
A collaborative and proactive approach to all aspects of the project was taken. This included the client, the design team, building users and other stakeholders. The project was delivered successfully, on time and finished with an outstanding level of quality.
